Part one

What to sign up for, and in what order

Most of the pain of arriving here comes from doing things in the wrong sequence — turning up at Medicare without a myGov account, starting a job without a tax file number, or discovering in week six that an ambulance is not free. This is the order that works.

1

Before you fly

Weeks before departure

Put four numbers in your phone, sort the visa, and open a bank account from your sofa at home. None of this needs you to be in the country, and all of it is easier before you are jet-lagged.
