Darwin · ~255,000 · The Top End · ACST — 30 minutes behind the east coast, no daylight saving
The most culturally distinctive part of Australia and the place where Aboriginal culture is most visible in everyday life. The Territory runs on two seasons rather than four, has crocodiles in the water and Uluru at its heart, and rewards travellers who plan properly and punishes those who do not.
Every official NT link, in one place
The bodies that actually decide these things. Everything further down this page cites one of
them.
Concession card holders receive reduced fees; St John NT publishes the current schedule.
Typical cost if you do
An emergency callout commonly runs around $900–$1,200, and remote retrieval costs far more.
How to cover yourself
St John NT offers ambulance cover, and travel or visitor health insurance normally covers emergency transport. Given the distances here, do not travel uninsured.
Costs are directional and change without notice. Confirm on the official page before relying
on a figure.
Public transport is minimal outside Darwin and Alice Springs. Almost everyone travelling the Territory drives, and a reliable vehicle matters more here than anywhere else in Australia.
Bank card instead of a travel card? Darwin buses use the Tap and Ride card. Coverage is limited compared with the capitals.
Permanent residents have 3 months to convert to an NT licence. Temporary visa holders can generally keep using a valid overseas licence, with an English translation or an International Driving Permit if it is not in English. Distances here make vehicle condition a safety issue, not a convenience one.
