Bats

Do not touch

Do now Do not touch it. If bitten or scratched, clean the wound and see a doctor straight away.

Any bat in Australia could carry Australian bat lyssavirus, whatever it looks like. Do not touch or try to rescue a bat that is injured or in distress. Call your local wildlife rescue group.

  • Bites and scratches spread the virus. After a bite or scratch, rapid and thorough cleaning of the wound and getting medical advice straight away helps prevent infection. There is no cure once it develops.
  • Droppings, urine or blood, and walking near a roost, are not a risk if you do not handle bats.
